What Moissanite Actually Is

Moissanite was first discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan in a meteor crater in Arizona — fragments of silicon carbide that had arrived from space. Natural moissanite is extraordinarily rare. The stones used in fine jewellery today are lab-created under controlled conditions, replicating the same crystal structure with precision that nature cannot match consistently.

The numbers tell a clear story. Moissanite sits at 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale — second only to diamond at 10. It has a refractive index of 2.65, compared to diamond’s 2.42, which means it bends and disperses more light. In practical terms: more fire (the coloured spectral flashes), more brilliance (the white light return), and more scintillation (the play of light as the stone moves). A well-cut moissanite does not just approximate diamond. In measurable optical performance, it exceeds it.

The durability is equally straightforward. Moissanite does not cloud with age, does not lose brilliance, and will not scratch from anything other than diamond or corundum. It tolerates ultrasonic cleaning, steam cleaning, and the thermal shock of moving between temperatures. Twenty years from now, the stone will look the way it did the day it was set.

D is the highest colour grade — colourless under every lighting condition, including harsh fluorescent light that exposes warmth in lower grades. Cuts Available

The shape of a moissanite determines everything about how it interacts with light. Heritage & Co. offers moissanite engagement rings in the following cuts:

• Round Brilliant — 57 or 58 facets engineered for maximum light return. The round brilliant is the most optically efficient cut in existence. It is also the most forgiving of slight size differences between stones in multi-stone settings.
• Oval — An elongated brilliant cut that covers more finger area than a round of the same carat weight. The oval has a slenderising effect on the hand and pairs exceptionally well with pavé bands.
• Emerald — A rectangular step cut with long, open facets. The emerald cut does not sparkle — it flashes, producing broad planes of light and shadow that shift as the hand moves. It demands a high-clarity stone (which is why Heritage & Co. only stocks VVS1).
• Cushion — A square or slightly rectangular cut with rounded corners, sometimes called a pillow cut. Cushions balance brilliance with a softer, more romantic silhouette.
• Marquise — An elongated shape with pointed ends. The marquise maximises perceived size — a 1ct marquise looks substantially larger than a 1ct round. Bold, directional, and visually distinctive on the hand.
• Three Stone — A centre stone flanked by two smaller stones. The arrangement represents past, present, and future. It also creates a wider spread of light across the finger and adds visual weight without increasing the centre carat size.

Moissanite vs Diamond — The Honest Comparison

Diamond is harder (10 vs 9.25 Mohs). That is the only metric on which diamond objectively outperforms moissanite. In every optical measurement — brilliance, fire, scintillation — moissanite equals or exceeds diamond. In thermal conductivity, moissanite is close enough that some older-generation diamond testers register it as diamond (newer testers differentiate correctly, and Heritage & Co. is transparent about this — our moissanite is always identified as moissanite).

The practical question is whether that 0.75-point Mohs difference matters in a ring worn daily for 30 years. The answer: it does not. Moissanite is harder than sapphire (9.0), which has been used in royal engagement rings for centuries without durability concerns. The only material that can scratch moissanite is diamond itself — and most women are not routinely scraping their engagement ring against loose diamonds.

The price difference, however, is significant. A 2ct D/VVS1 round brilliant moissanite in 14K gold from Heritage & Co. costs approximately R24,995.
