Choosing between Heritage & Co. and Shimansky for an engagement ring? Both are South African jewellers, both work with high-grade stones — but the buying experience, pricing model, and stone philosophy are different enough that the right choice depends on what you actually value.

This page is a factual comparison. We've kept it specific.

Where Shimansky leads

Shimansky has been crafting jewellery in Cape Town since 1989. Three things they do exceptionally well that Heritage & Co. doesn't try to compete with.

In-person retail experience. Multiple flagship stores in Cape Town and Johannesburg, including the V&A Waterfront's Diamond Experience tour. If you want to see, hold, and try on stones in a private viewing room before committing, Shimansky's showroom model is built for that.

Mined diamond inventory at scale. If your priority is a natural mined diamond — particularly larger stones above 2 carats — Shimansky has the buying relationships and inventory depth that comes with thirty-five years of operation.

Established luxury heritage. The brand's longevity, category-defining work like the Brilliant 10 cut, and the institutional reputation built over three decades are difficult to replicate.

If those three things are what matter most for your purchase, Shimansky is the right call.

Where Heritage & Co. is different

1. Every price is published

Walk into most South African jewellers and you'll be quoted in the showroom — different stones, different prices, decided as the conversation unfolds. It's the standard category model, and Shimansky operates this way. It works for some buyers; for many, it adds friction.

Heritage & Co. publishes every price on the website. The Invicta Prima starts at R15,500. The Aeterna Aurora at R24,995. The Claritas range from R30,000. You can compare, calculate, and decide before you ever speak to us. No quotes. No haggling. No "let me check what we can do."

2. Lab diamond and moissanite, not mined

This is the biggest fork between the two brands. Mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are chemically and visually identical — same atomic structure, same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, same brilliance, same fire. The difference is origin: mined diamonds form in the earth over billions of years; lab-grown diamonds are grown in six to ten weeks under controlled pressure and heat.

Lab diamonds typically cost 60–80% less than equivalent mined stones at the same grade. We pass that saving directly to you. Our Claritas line uses IGI-graded D colour, VVS1 clarity, Excellent cut lab diamonds — the same stone profile a mined-diamond-equivalent would carry, at a different price.

Moissanite is a separate stone — silicon carbide, not diamond. It refracts more fire than diamond, has a slightly different visual signature, and costs less again. Our Invicta and Aeterna lines use GRA-certified D/VVS1/Excellent moissanite.

Shimansky's primary inventory is mined diamond. If you want a mined stone, that's their territory, not ours.

3. Made to order, not stock pull

Every Heritage & Co. ring is made to order over five weeks. Your stone is graded, your size is set, the ring is built for you. No two pieces sit on a shelf waiting to be bought.

That's a slower process than walking out of a showroom with a ring the same day. It's deliberate — it lets us hold a fixed stone-grade standard on every centre stone, every time: D colour, VVS1 clarity, Excellent cut. No upsell to a higher grade because that's "what's available." No compromise to a lower one because that's "what's in stock."

Stone grading — the technical detail

Both brands work with certified stones. The certification bodies differ.

Shimansky primarily uses GIA-graded mined diamonds, with some EGL-graded stones in the range.

Heritage & Co. uses IGI for lab-grown diamonds and GRA for moissanite. We don't use GIA for lab-grown because GIA changed their lab-grown classification on 1 October 2025 to a Premium/Standard system, eliminating the per-stone 4Cs detail that engagement-ring buyers actually want to see.

Every Heritage & Co. centre stone is D colour, VVS1 clarity, Excellent cut. That's a buying simplification — you don't have to negotiate where on the grading scale you're landing. It's locked.

Who each is right for

Shimansky is right for you if: you want a mined diamond (especially above 2 carats), you value an in-store retail experience and want to try multiple stones in person, you prefer the showroom-led buying process, or brand heritage and longevity matter to your purchase decision.

Heritage & Co. is right for you if: you want the same stone grade (D/VVS1/Excellent) at a lower price point, you're comfortable with online research and want to compare prices before speaking to anyone, lab diamond or moissanite suit your priorities, or you prefer made-to-order over showroom inventory.

These aren't competing positions. They're different buying philosophies for different priorities.

Frequently asked

Is moissanite a "real" diamond?
No. Moissanite is silicon carbide; diamond is carbon. Both are durable (moissanite 9.25, diamond 10 on the Mohs scale) and both look brilliant under light. They are different materials.

Is a lab-grown diamond a "real" diamond?
Yes. Same chemical composition, same hardness, same optical properties as a mined diamond. The IGI certificate discloses that the stone is lab-grown so the origin is transparent.

Why is Heritage & Co. cheaper than Shimansky?
Three reasons. Lab diamond and moissanite cost less than mined diamond at the same grade. Made-to-order means no inventory holding cost. Online-first means no flagship-store overhead.

Can I see a Heritage & Co. ring before I buy?
Yes. Virtual viewing via WhatsApp video is available, and a Cape Town V&A Waterfront viewing room is available by appointment from April 2026.

Will Heritage & Co. resize my ring after purchase?
Yes. Resize service is included as part of the 20-year warranty.
