Lab Diamond Engagement Rings South Africa — GIA Certified, D/VVS1, 18K Solid Gold
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Not a simulant, not an alternative, not a compromise. It is carbon crystallised under extreme heat and pressure into the same atomic lattice structure that forms 150 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface — except it is grown in a controlled environment over weeks rather than excavated from a mine over millennia. The GIA grades it using the same 4Cs methodology. A jeweller’s loupe cannot distinguish it. A diamond tester reads it as diamond because it is one.
Heritage & Co.’s Claritas Collection pairs GIA-certified lab diamonds — D colour, VVS1 clarity — with 18K solid gold settings. This is the standard demanded by the world’s most respected jewellery houses: the highest colour grade, the second-highest clarity grade, and the metal purity that Cartier, Van Cleef, and Tiffany require for their own engagement rings. We apply the same standard at a price point that reflects the efficiency of lab-grown production rather than the scarcity economics of mining.
Why GIA Certification Matters
The Gemological Institute of America is the organisation that invented the modern diamond grading system — the 4Cs of cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. When a diamond carries a GIA report, it has been assessed by the same institution that wrote the rules. This is not a regional lab or a third-party aggregator. It is the global authority.
Every Heritage & Co. lab diamond is individually GIA-graded. The report covers colour (D — completely colourless, the highest possible grade), clarity (VVS1 — inclusions invisible under 10x magnification), cut quality, carat weight, fluorescence, and symmetry. The GIA report number is laser-inscribed on the diamond’s girdle, visible only under magnification, linking the physical stone to its permanent digital record.
Some South African retailers sell lab diamonds certified by lesser-known laboratories. The grades may read the same — D, VVS1 — but grading standards vary between institutions. A stone graded D/VVS1 by a lenient lab might grade F/VS2 under GIA’s stricter methodology. Heritage & Co. uses GIA exclusively because the name on the report should mean something when you are making a once-in-a-lifetime purchase.
The Claritas Collection — From R44,995
Claritas is Heritage & Co.’s flagship tier. Every ring in this collection is set in 18K solid gold — 75% pure gold, the legal hallmarking standard for fine jewellery in South Africa and the purity grade used by every maison in Place Vendôme, Bond Street, and Fifth Avenue.
Available settings range from the pure geometry of a solitaire to pavé bands with GIA-certified accent diamonds, hidden halos, cathedral shoulders, and three-stone arrangements. The design principle is consistent across the collection: the diamond leads, and the setting serves. No unnecessary metalwork. No visual noise. The ring should look as considered in 20 years as it does today.
Pricing by centre stone size:
- 1.0ct GIA lab diamond in 18K gold — from R44,995
- 1.5ct GIA lab diamond in 18K gold — from R54,995
- 2.0ct GIA lab diamond in 18K gold — from R64,995
- 3.0ct+ GIA lab diamond in 18K gold — pricing on request for stones above 3ct
Full per-cut pricing is published on our transparent pricing page. Heritage & Co. does not discount, negotiate, or run promotional events. The listed price is the fair price.
Lab Diamond vs Mined Diamond — What Is Actually Different
Physically: nothing. A lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond share the same crystal structure (cubic carbon), the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same thermal conductivity, the same refractive index (2.42), and the same density (3.52 g/cm³). They are graded on the same scale. They look identical under the same loupe. The distinction is provenance, not substance.
A mined diamond forms deep in the earth’s mantle over one to three billion years, then reaches the surface through volcanic eruption. A lab diamond is grown from a carbon seed using one of two methods: HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition). Both replicate the conditions of natural formation. The result is the same crystal — one simply took three billion years less.
The ethical case is straightforward. Lab diamond production does not require open-pit mining, does not displace communities, and does not carry the chain-of-custody risks associated with certain diamond-producing regions. Heritage & Co. does not make moral claims about other people’s purchasing decisions — but we are transparent about why we chose this path for our own brand.
The price case is equally clear. In South Africa, a 1ct D/VVS1 mined diamond engagement ring from a traditional jeweller runs between R150,000 and R250,000 depending on the retailer, setting, and brand premium. Heritage & Co.’s equivalent — same 4Cs grade, same GIA certification, same 18K gold — starts from R44,995. The cost difference is not because the lab diamond is inferior. It is because it is not scarce. And scarcity is a pricing mechanism, not a quality indicator.
Cuts Available in Lab Diamond
Heritage & Co. stocks lab diamond engagement rings in the following shapes, all GIA-certified D/VVS1:
- Round Brilliant — The benchmark cut for diamond engagement rings. 57 or 58 facets optimised for light performance. Heritage & Co. selects only Excellent or Very Good cut grades for round brilliants.
- Oval — A modified brilliant cut that maximises face-up size. The oval creates an elegant, elongated silhouette and is currently the most requested diamond shape in South Africa.
- Emerald — A step cut defined by long parallel facets. The emerald does not sparkle — it produces deep, glassy flashes and broad planes of light. It is the connoisseur’s cut, chosen for its restraint.
- Cushion — A soft square with gentle curves and brilliant-cut faceting. The cushion is warm, romantic, and visually substantial for its carat weight.
- Marquise — An elongated shape with pointed ends, producing the largest face-up area of any cut at a given carat weight. Dramatic, distinctive, and unmistakable from across a room.
- Pear — A teardrop silhouette combining the brilliance of a round with the visual length of a marquise. Pear-shaped diamonds are directional — worn with the point toward the fingernail for maximum elongation.
- Radiant — A rectangular or square cut with brilliant faceting on a step-cut outline. The radiant combines the geometric shape of an emerald with the sparkle of a round brilliant.
Lab Diamond vs Moissanite — Which Should You Choose
Heritage & Co. offers both, and we have no commercial incentive to steer you toward one over the other. The choice comes down to two factors: budget and personal priority.
If the diamond name carries emotional weight — if it matters to her (or to you) that the stone on her hand is a real diamond, graded by the GIA, and passes every diamond test without qualification — then Claritas is the collection. A lab diamond is a diamond in every sense. It simply costs less than a mined one.
If optical performance and value are the primary criteria — if you want the largest, most brilliant stone possible for the budget — then moissanite in the Invicta or Aeterna collection delivers more fire and more visual impact per rand than any diamond, lab or mined. Our full comparison guide covers the technical and emotional dimensions: Lab Diamond vs Moissanite.
